Ocumeda reaches milestone in eye care: 500,000 eye check-ups
Over 110,000 people with abnormalities requiring clarification identified through early eye care
More than 3,500 people with urgent medical treatment needs identified
Over 800 partner opticians enable low-threshold access to early detection

Ocumeda, together with its partner opticians, has conducted more than 500,000 eye check-ups, thereby reaching a major milestone in preventive eye care. The results impressively underscore the contribution that early and accessable screenings can make to preserving vision.
Abnormalities were detected in almost one in four people examined – over 110,000 people in total. In more than 3,500 cases, there was an urgent need for action: abnormalities were identified that required urgent ophthalmological clarification and treatment, such as vascular occlusions, retinal detachments, or even malignant tumors. The Ocumeda team proactively supported these customers in referring them for medical care.
At the same time, the data shows the high demand for more accessible eye care: for over 88% of participants, their last visit to an ophthalmologist was more than two years ago. 63% of them had not visited an ophthalmologist's office for over five years, or even never.
“500,000 eye check-ups show what a difference close cooperation between optometry and medicine can make for the early detection of eye diseases,” says Dr. Benedikt Wiechers, Managing Director and founder of Ocumeda. “Together with our partner opticians, we create an easy access to eye care and reach people much earlier – often before they even notice any symptoms themselves. The fact that we have already been able to identify thousands of people with an urgent need for medical action and guide them specifically to the right care demonstrates the social and medical value of our healthcare approach. It makes me proud to see how we are helping to prevent avoidable vision loss through interdisciplinary collaboration.”
The Ocumeda eye check-up is based on a hybrid care approach: specially trained optometrists take measurements directly in the optical shop using modern equipment. The collected data is then evaluated digitally by a network of ophthalmologists. Customers receive the medical report with individual recommendations for action the next day. In the event of abnormalities, Ocumeda actively supports those affected with further ophthalmological clarification.
This access to early detection is made possible by a network of now more than 800 affiliated opticians in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. This includes well-known partners such as Fielmann, Zeiss, DELKER Optik, Neusehland, Binder Optik, 1-2-3 Brille, the LoQu Group and many others. Together, they bring eye care to where people regularly have their vision checked anyway – accessible, straightforward, and integrated into everyday life.
ABOUT OCUMEDA
Ocumeda is one of the leading tele-ophthalmology platforms in Europe. Ocumeda's mission is to prevent vision loss and blindness in millions of people. The company was founded by an interdisciplinary team around renowned Swiss ophthalmologists, who were repeatedly confronted with patients whose serious eye diseases were often diagnosed too late – with the result that vision loss was no longer preventable. This observation was the impetus for the founding of Ocumeda, with the goal of making eye care accessible to everyone. To date, Ocumeda has already screened over 500,000 people and has a network of more than 800 optical shops and ophthalmologists.
